What is a Portuguese NIF?
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal’s tax identification number, issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority. It is required for almost any financial or administrative activity in Portugal, such as opening a bank account, signing a lease, working, paying taxes, or buying property.
Both residents and foreigners need a NIF. Portuguese citizens receive it automatically, while foreigners, especially non-EU citizens, must apply for one, often through a local tax representative.
